Why Would LED Strip Lights Flicker?

Is the LED Driver Causing the Flicker?

Low-voltage LED strips normally require a compatible constant-voltage power supply. A 12V strip should use a 12V supply, while a 24V strip requires 24V. KEYFINE also notes that 12V and 24V strips are not interchangeable.

The driver should also provide sufficient wattage for the total strip length. An undersized supply may cause flashing, unstable brightness, or shutdown when the load increases.

Why Do Long LED Strip Runs Flicker?

Voltage drop becomes more important as strip length and power demand increase. Insufficient PCB copper, undersized wiring, long cable distances, or feeding a long strip from only one end can produce uneven voltage.

For example, KEYFINE’s 5730 LED strip uses 24V DC, 120 LEDs per meter and a maximum power consumption of 14.4W per meter. Electrical design must therefore consider total wattage and installation length before selecting the power supply.

Other Common Flicker Causes

Buyers should also check:

  • Loose connectors or weak solder joints

  • Incompatible dimmers or controllers

  • Poor PCB conductivity

  • Excessive voltage drop

  • Driver overload

  • Damaged LEDs or components

  • Unstable mains input

IEEE 1789-2015 provides recommended practices for controlling current modulation in high-brightness LEDs and reducing risks associated with flicker.

What Should Buyers Check Before Bulk Ordering?

A project sourcing checklist should include driver compatibility, PCB copper specification, voltage-drop calculation, dimming compatibility, aging-test results and batch consistency.

For export projects, applicable requirements should also be reviewed. IEC 62031:2026 specifies safety requirements for LED modules, while EU RoHS restricts hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. EU lighting regulations also recognize PstLM and SVM as metrics for evaluating flicker and stroboscopic effects.

Stable LED strip performance is therefore not determined by the LED chip alone. Proper driver matching, PCB design, electrical engineering and factory-level quality control all help reduce flicker across commercial installations and repeat bulk orders.
