A transformer or LED driver is used to convert mains electricity into the voltage required by led strip lights. Most low-voltage strips operate at 12V or 24V DC and cannot be connected directly to 110V or 220V AC. The correct power unit also stabilizes output, helping prevent flicker, overheating and premature LED failure.

IEC 61347-2-13:2024 specifies safety requirements for electronic controlgear used with LED light sources on AC supplies up to 1,000V and DC supplies up to 1,500V. This confirms that power conversion and regulation are essential parts of a safe lighting system.

Transformer or LED Driver

The word transformer is often used broadly, but modern LED strips normally require an electronic constant-voltage driver. A traditional transformer may only reduce AC voltage, while a suitable LED driver converts AC into regulated DC output.
